The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew The Grand Palace has been home to the Thai Royal family since it's construction in the 18th century, when the capital of Siam (Thailand) was moved to Bangkok. Although you can not go inside the palace itself, you can wonder the grounds and marvel at the magnificence of the building. Within the palace walls is also the most sacred temple in Thailand, Wat Phra Kaew (also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha). This temple is magnificent and it's ubosot (main shrine) contains the sacred symbol of Thailand, the Emerald Buddha. 2. Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) This temple is located near the Grand Palace. began construction in the 18th century. Most importantly though, it is home to the gigantic 45m long and 15m high Reclining Buddha, created in gold leaf with Mother-of-pear inlaid on it's feet. Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) This temple began construction in 1809 and is located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, opposite the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. It's possible to take a train if you are staying in the Sukhumvit area,otherwise a metered taxi will cost around 100Baht from the Khao San Road area.
